Winter Tree Maintenance in Dublin: The Essentials

Tree Maintenance

Tree Maintenance in Dublin

Trees are like sleeping giants in winter, hibernating through the freezing temperatures until the warmer weather arrives. They are quietly working their magic beneath the winter’s blanket – actively enduring the harsh conditions.

Older trees, with their thick, woody bark and deep, sprawling roots, are well-suited to endure the winter weather. However, newly planted trees lack natural defences to withstand the cold and become highly vulnerable during such situations. Maybe old or new, all trees will definitely benefit from the extra care during chilly seasons. Here are some tips shared by professionals from Dublin tree services on how you can help your trees prosper through the winter.

Mulching

One of the simplest and the most effective ways to maintain healthy trees is – by mulching. Mulching around the base of the tree provides a blanket that helps insulate the soil. Applying mulch around your trees during winter helps keep the soil warmer and creates a more stable environment for the roots to grow stronger.

Remember, when it comes to adding mulch, don’t go overboard. Less is always more in mulching. Spread a light layer of mulch, keeping it under 3 inches thick, around the tree’s base. Applying a layer that’s too thick actually does more harm to the trees than good – preventing the water from reaching the roots. Spread the mulch in a broad ring around the tree, extending to the drip line, which is roughly the outer edge of the tree’s branches.

Be careful not to pile mulch against the trunk – otherwise, it will trap moisture and can even lead to rotting and also attract pests.

Pruning

One of the best things that you can do for your trees during winter is pruning. Tree pruning in Dublin during colder months, also known as ‘dormant pruning’, means that you’re working along the tree’s natural cycle. During winter, trees are dormant – which means that it will be much less intrusive to prune the trees. This will not only help lessen the branches that can cause irritation around the trees but also help control diseases that can affect the trees during such vulnerable conditions.

Since the trees are not actively growing in winter, they are in a better condition to handle pruning without unnecessary stress and have enough time to heal before spring growth begins. Plus, tree trimming in Dublin during winter makes it easier to see the structure of the trees. Without the leaves in the way, you can spot branches that cross, rub, or grow awkwardly and remove them before they become an issue.

Protect

When winter hits, food becomes scarce for animals like rabbits, moles, and deer. With this limited availability of food, critters turn to the bark of young roots and they gnaw away to reach the nutrient-rich layers beneath. This disrupts the nutrient flow of the young trees and can even kill them.  Therefore it is important to protect your trees from hungry animals during winter.

Another way to protect your trees from animals is by setting up a simple fence around each trunk. Make sure the fence is tall enough so that animals cannot jump or climb over it. Also you can use plastic guards or hardware cloth to safeguard the tree trunk from rodents – at the same time make sure to leave a little room so that the trunk isn’t squeezed tightly.

Deer can be another issue, especially since they sometimes rub their antlers against young trees, stripping off bark in the process. Taller fences or sturdy guards can help keep them at bay, too. Check your protective measures from time to time to ensure there is no gap between them.

Shelter

Unlike old trees that have mature bodies and roots to protect them from freezing temperatures and animals, new trees don’t have much defence because they are still in the process of developing their roots and shoots. Their tender trunks and delicate roots are much more vulnerable to freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and even curious animals looking for a winter snack. Therefore, it is essential for you to take steps to protect the young trees during winter – and one way to do this is by setting up a shelter around them.

For smaller trees, you can create a protective “tent” with stakes and burlap. Just place a few stakes around the tree, then loosely wrap burlap around the stakes. This will create a cosy barrier and protect the trees from freezing winds and heavy snow. Make sure not to wrap the burlap directly around the tree trunk – this will trap the moisture and lead to rotting. If snow accumulates on the branches, carefully sweep it off using a broom.  Make sure you sweep upwards to avoid pushing down the limbs.

Water

Winter doesn’t mean that you can give up on watering. Especially for younger trees, they need proper watering to build new roots. As long as the soil hasn’t frozen, the tree’s roots can take in water, and help them absorb nutrients and grow resilience.

When watering in winter, take a slow and gentle approach. By applying water gradually, you give it time to seep deeply into the soil, where the roots can access it. Opt for a watering can with a slim nozzle. You can also set a hose to a light trickle, allowing water to sink in without the risk of freezing on the surface or running off. Avoid using a high-pressure spray, which can freeze quickly and can even leave patches of ice around the tree.
